What is Metal Clay?

Some of the pieces in my shop are made with copper metal clay. Many people aren't familiar with this product or process so I thought this page would be helpful if you're curious what metal clay is. Basically, metal clay is tiny particles of metal mixed with water and a binder. It has a consistency of modeling clay and can be shaped, textured, cut, imprinted, etc. just like clay. It dries and hardens and then the edges can be sanded smooth and any holes drilled, if needed. Then it is ready for firing. Firing burns away the binder leaving a piece of solid metal. So cool! I use a kiln at 1778 degrees to fire my copper clay pieces. Several more steps happen before a piece is finished, and you can take a look at the photos to see what the process looks like. :)
